The international law firm CMS has closed a deal with Juraj Fuska that will see him become a partner in Bratislava. Earlier this year, Fuska had set up his own practice called Aldertree after spending a decade at White & Case. But his availability attracted the attention of CMS, which is making a concerted effort to boost its coverage of Central & Eastern Europe.

Fuska is a leading M&A corporate lawyer in Slovakia as well as a capital markets expert and brings years of experience leading an international law firm. “I think there can be a real synergy achieved by joining CMS,” says Fuska. “I believe the office in Bratislava has strong growth potential. My goal would be to contribute to making it a top international law firm in Slovakia.” Coming with Fuska to CMS will be three of his associates:  Martin Melicher, Demian Boska and Richard Svocak.

CMS partner Lukas Hejduk said Fuska’s experience in greenfield investments is another strong argument for the move, given the continued influx of FDI.

Last year, CMS hired large teams away from Linklaters and Greenberg Traurig in Poland. “Our ambition in CEE is clear,” says Hejduk. “We want to be the best law firm in CEE and in every country. So, when the opportunity came it wasn’t a difficult choice. Juraj’s clients are amazing, and they’re the right clients for CMS.”

For his part, Fuska says moving back into the international realm was his best option. “It’s really a better set-up for my career,” he said over the phone. “You have a team and a network you can utilize, there’s a clear strategy on how to develop the company’s business and continue it in the respective markets. And from my viewpoint CMS is the best choice.”
