Three Czech and two foreign studios have gone through to the second round of an architectural competition for a city-led residential project in Prague 5 – Smíchov. The investor, Pražská developerská společnost (PDS) is developing a building with 50 rental flats and retail space on the ground floor. A 12-member jury chose the following studios for the next round: Apropos Architects, ov architekti, Atelier bod architekti, Baumschlager Hutter and Johan de Wachter Architecten (the last two are foreign-based). They’ll have until June to submit their final bids for the competition. PDS plans to announce the results in August.

Prague’s deputy mayor Petr Hlaváček said the location was a perfect place for PDS to hold its first architectural competition. He hinted that the new building will provide a visual alternative to the Brutalist Komerční banka building across V Botanice street.

PDS director Petr Urbánek said all five studios have plenty of experience designing residential projects. “All of us at PDS are excited to see how they come to grips with the fairly demanding project brief which requires them to integrate the many conflicting requirements and limitations of such an exceptional location,” he said.

Bids will be judged on the quality of urbanistic, architectural and transport solution, on their positive impact on the surroundings, and on whether the design is in harmony with the character of the neighborhood.
