It’s impossible to label the tornado that destroyed and damaged hundreds of homes across Southern Moravia on June 24, 2021 as anything but a disaster. But as the Portuguese architect Marco Maio understood, opportunity also lay in the ruins of all those collapsed buildings and public squares. He spent the next few months developing a plan to have his architectural students at the Construction Faculty in Prague prepare studies of what the main square of Moravská Nová Ves could look like. The idea wasn’t to convince local residents and officials of how to rebuild their town. Rather, it was to provoke a discussion. To give them a chance to say what they liked and didn’t like in the pictures as a first step in figuring out what they actually want.
